South Marston Jubilee celebrations

This weekend’s jubilee celebrations were very successful in bringing the village together.

Swindon Advertiser had this to say:

It seemed like the whole village of South Marston was out to make a toast to Her Majesty on Saturday.

A street party in Old Vicarage Lane was so popular it took on more of a village fete feel, with the Highworth Silver Band providing musical entertainment.

Cakes were flying off the table with donations to help improve the guttering in the church, while quiz sheets were handed out to residents and plants were sold.

Everybody brought their own picnics and wine glasses were kept topped up as spirits remained high throughout the day.

The event was made possible after an advert was placed in the village magazine asking for volunteers to help out.

Angela Newton was one of the volunteers.

She said: “We are very impressed with the turn out, it is absolutely wonderful, we think most of the village have come out.”

Villager Tina Hiscocks said: “We didn’t have a party for the Royal Wedding – I think most people wanted to stay inside to watch that on television whereas this year it is a bit different and we thought people would want to do something to celebrate.

Fiona Hemmings and husband Steve, took their two children Holly, four and 15-month-old Jake along to the celebrations.

It’s all for the kids really,” said Fiona. “It’s a lovely party – we have only really got to know people in the village since Holly has been going to pre-school so it is nice, I think they have done a good job with the party.”

Valerie Goodheart, 69, has lived in the village for 14 years. “I think the Jubilee is great – it shows our Britishness, I’m all for it,” she said. “We have had a very good turn out.

See tomorrow’s Adver for pictures from all of the street parties and celebrations.

This is Wiltshire: help needed for Youth Club

This is Wiltshire ran the following article regarding two youth clubs in the area.

….

A Monday youth group in South Marston has warned it faces closure unless two adult helpers are found.

The club is appealing for volunteers to organise the tuck shop, set up and pack away, and run activities for the children.

The day-to-day administration will continue to be carried out by the youth club’s committee, with training available.

Due to a change in circumstances the main adult helpers were no longer able to run the club. Organisers have said that with only one youth helper left the club will close if volunteers do not come forward.

All that is required is a commitment of about three hours on a weekly basis.

BBC: work to improve Swindon’s pedestrian and cycle links

BBC Wiltshire, today reported on the plans to improve cycle access around Swindon, including South Marston

Pedestrian and cycle links to industrial sites in Swindon are to be improved as part of a £525,000 scheme.

Work to replace an “informal dirt track” accessing the Techno Trading Estate is to start at the end of June.

While work on a pedestrian footpath and cycle route along Highworth Road to the South Marston Industrial Estate will begin in August.

Councillor Keith Williams said they would “give more reasons for businesses to locate or stay in Swindon”.

“Swindon has a very good record in providing cycle routes in particular, and the town has one of the most extensive networks in the South,” said Mr Williams, cabinet member for leisure and strategic transport.

“These new routes will give people sustainable choices about how they travel to work, and give more reasons for businesses to locate or stay in Swindon.”

The project is being partly funded by the National Lottery via the sustainable transport charity SUSTRANS.

Monday Youth Group at Risk of Closing

Due to changes in circumstances our main adult helpers are no longer able to run the club on a Monday, this leaves us with one Youth Helper. We are, therefore in desperate need of 2 adults who would be willing to run the club on a Monday, the day to day administration will continue to be done by the committee.

We just need people to be able to be there on a club night to organise tuck shop, setting up and packing away and to run activities for the children, all with the support of the Committee. All that is required is a commitment of about 3 hours on a fortnightly basis. Training is available. Unfortunately if enough volunteers cannot be found the club will have to close. Please contact Julie or Steve for more info.

Oil Painting Workspace

On 8th May a talk was given by Jane Clements on “Narrow Boat Art” . Other parts of the British Isles vary in format and content of pictures but the English generally paint flowers and scenery, portraying a castle, water and a rowing boat. No one is sure how or why the trend of depicting these items started. Jane then showed us how the flowers are painted using oil based paints and boards with the stages of the flower development adding items to each board to reach the finished picture. Her skill was impressive – she made it look so simple with her accurate brush strokes using various size brushes.

An important part is getting the paint consistency correct to avoid runs.

On 16th May over 40 members/non members went on an outing to Dorchester Market and Weymouth. We enjoyed the large indoor and outdoor markets at Dorchester with plenty of bargains to be had. Then on to Weymouth on new roads especially built for the Olympic Games. The sea front, clock and statues had also been given a fresh coat of paint and spring clean and the bridge was closed for refurbishment, all to be ready for the big event.
