Christmas Gifts

At Christmas there was an opportunity to give a gift towards the church‘s fabric fund. I would like to thank you for your generosity; the appeal raised £798 some of which was ‗gift aided‘ and will eventually yield more from the taxman. This is the best response we have had for a Christmas appeal so thank you again.

On Christmas Eve we had such a wonderful Christingle service with standing room only—we were able to send £200 to the Children‘s Society.

I am still the Vicar of South Marston and hope to continue to build the relationships between church and village. Please do keep in contact and don‘t forget to come to Meeting Point so that we can have a chat.

God Bless,

Vicky

Lent Course: ‘God is closer than you think’

Our Lent course begins on Ash Wednesday 22nd February, 7pm at St. Margaret‘s Church.
We shall then be meeting every Monday at 7.30pm in St. Margaret’s Centre, Kenwin Close. The six sessions are as follows:

  2. Where is God in my world?
  3. Partnering with God today
  4. Listening to the voice of God,
  5. God wants a relationship with you
  6. Heaven breaking through.

The church was beautifully decorated—a huge thank you to the Flower Team for all their hard work. We had wonderful service it was good to welcome so many with splendid homemade cakes and drinks!

The gifts of fresh produce were given to Gloucester House and the groceries were given to Swindon Food Bank. Our plate collection is going to Tear Fund (find out more on the Tear Fund website) and we were pleased to send a donation of £200.

The School Harvest Service was excellent and it was such a joy to be able to share this with them in our church. It was the first time we used our new microphones and it made a huge difference.

Thank you
Mr Tony Harris has given our ‘Guttering Fund’ a gift of £500 —we are so grateful for this gift. Each gift is a step towards ensuring our ancient church is maintained and not lost to future generations. It is a place of quiet and peace where many of our village friends and family have been laid to rest. It is a place that people use to come and think, to reflect and meditate. Not all those who use this sacred place are Christians, or come to church, it is used by many who just value the atmosphere and history. Do you value it? Do you want to preserve it? If so, any gift you can give will help towards its preservation. Thank you for your generosity.

POLITE NOTICE
Have you noticed how tidy the church grounds are now? A huge thank you to Colin and Jenny McEwen for cutting the Glebe grass and Richard Sansum and William Hiscocks for working hard in the churchyard. PLEASE help us to keep it tidy by disposing of non-biodegradable things in the bin provided and compost the rest in the designated area. Thank you.

Church Funds

Many of you will remember Mrs Win Smith. She was very involved in village life and is remembered with great affection. Win loved this village and its church. Sadly Win died last year but she remembered her church to the last and has left £1,000 for Church funds. We wish to express our deep gratitude for this generous and thoughtful gift.

We are also grateful for other donations we have received for our guttering appeal—wouldn’t it be good to get this work done before the winter comes? Damp brings so many problems to old buildings and the more we can do to prevent it the better. Its is after all our heritage we are looking after. We can’t do it without your help.

The Annual Meeting.

Donald Page and Richard Sansum were elected as Church Wardens once more. William Hiscocks is Treasurer and Tina Hiscocks is PCC Secretary. We are very grateful for their commitment to continue in office. Also elected as PCC members are Diane Gambles and Shirley Wildern. Diane is also our Deanery Synod Representative. Our vision continues to be helping people to explore faith, serving the community through our links with the school, Meeting Point and sharing the joys and difficulties of life when called upon. We want to repair and renew the guttering and downpipes but raising the money for this necessary maintenance is proving very difficult — will you help us?

The Celebration Fellowship Supper

We had a great supper with a choice of hot meals and followed by sumptuous deserts and all washed down with a glass of wine. We watched a Powerpoint presentation celebrating last year—a lot of banter about the pictures ensued! A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the food, setting up and clearing up – and to those who supported the evening.

Guttering News

At the March Meeting Point we held a raffle in aid of the guttering and with extra donations raised £73.50. Thank you so much for supporting this. We are thinking about putting together a village cookbook—do you have a recipe and maybe a local story to go into this? If so please send it to Vicky Fleming at the Vicarage or email it to revs.fleming@tiscali.co.uk. Raising the money we need is going to be a long haul but we don’t want future generations to have to deal with the larger problems damp and water damage bring. The church building is part of our heritage and is used by many people other than those who worship on a Sunday. Will you help us?

These are available from Donald Page and Meeting Point.

Stratton Team Ministry Lent Studies 2011

This year we are joining with other Christians and with the Diocese in celebrating the 400th year of being able to read the Bible in our own language. As part of this we are going to study Matthew’s Gospel in Lent. As a corporate Lenten Spiritual Discipline, following the leadership of our Bishops, we are encouraging people to join with Anglicans in the Diocese to read Matthew’s Gospel duringthe 6 weeks of Lent. This is roughly a chapter each working day. Everyone is of course free to do this is their own way, whatever best suits your taste and pattern, but here is an outline programme that you may find helpful useful available in church. You will also find in church the Lent Study Programme. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together and seek to grow in our relationship with God and each other. Please make this part of your journey through Lent.
