The children are enjoying their new topics. The older children are even having a topic all about chocolate, learning about how it was invented and the famous Roald Dahl story of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. They are especially looking forward to trying some unusual chocolate recipes!

A sub-group of the governing body are in the process of looking into school travel arrangements. The school travel plan was written in 2009 and the sub-group would like to update the travel information that we have and then use this to formulate an action plan and prioritise improvements. Parents and pupils have been asked to complete a survey which has been developed in conjunction with the school travel advisor for Swindon Borough Council.

As a school, we are having a focus on The Arts and are looking forward to having extra visitors in and activities based around Music, Drama and other arts. Our whole school learn to learn day will be based around ‘George and the Dragon’ this term and we are all excited to see the creative ideas shown by the children. We are also looking forward to having our school sculpture completed which the children were involved with designing last year. The sculpture has been developed by local artist Diccon Dadey. Keep an eye out for it arriving in our school entrance soon!

South Marston School News – Dec 2011

We have been as busy as ever here at our village school.

Built in 1924, and now in steam at the Swindon...

This term our Year 1 & 2 children really enjoyed a visit to the Swindon and Cricklade Railway. The children, staff and parent helpers really enjoyed having a journey on the train and even got to see the controls in the driver’s cab. We would like to thank the staff for their very warm welcome.

We have been as busy as ever this term. The new Reception children are settling in well, many of whom are from our village. They are enjoying their welly walks already and have been finding out lots about how to keep healthy in their ‘Cat in the Hat’ Dr Seuss topic.

On 29th September, Class 3 & 4 spent the afternoon at the official opening of St Julian’s Close woods. The afternoon was hosted by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, supported by Hills developers who built the houses at St Julian’s and have worked alongside WWT to create a small woodland area. The sun was shining and the children enjoyed many activities including nature big art, clay tile making, fire making, conker playing, a walk in the woods and delicious cupcakes with homemade apple juice.

The final part of the afternoon saw the unveiling of a mosaic, which the children helped to design a few months ago with artist Anita and the second unveiling of a leaf inspired metal bench. We had a wonderful time and we would encourage all parents/grandparents to go down to the woods one day and you’ll be sure of a big surprise!

The children, staff and many parents enjoyed a lovely service at our village Church to celebrate Harvest. The singing, storytelling and poetry recitals were fantastic and we are very proud of the children. Thank you for the wonderful donations to the Swindon Food Bank. We filled 7 boxes with donations from parents and the church. If anyone else would like to donate please send into school and we will ensure that we pass it on.

We would also like to announce our Christmas performance dates in South Marston Church for parents:

Monday 5th December at 1.30pm

Tuesday 6th December at 6.30pm

School Update – Oct 2011

A great big welcome to all our new Reception children and families at our school this term, many of whom are from the village. The new children have settled in well; making friends and learning about their new topic of ‘The Cat in the Hat’ in Class 1.

Also a huge welcome back to all our existing children and families. We are looking forward to many exciting events coming up, including the St Julians opening celebrations and International Day.

We would also like to thank the PTA and preschool committee for their wonderful fundraising last year which funded the brilliant playground markings which the children are really enjoying!

Windsor Castle

We have again been busy…

Last term Class 2 went on a fantastic trip to Windsor Castle. What made it even more exciting was the fact that The Queen was actually in residence at the time! They saw the state apartments and the room with all the coats of arms. This was especially interesting as Class 2 have been learning about their own family’s coat of arms. One child from the village even spotted his family’s coat of arms on the wall! They were also able to take part in a learning session about the castle and had the chance to dress up as knights in armour and learn what they did in the past. Everyone had a great day.

Also last term Class 3 had a special Viking visitor as part of their topic. Thor the Viking was very friendly and informative about the Viking way of life. Amongst other things the pupils learned about how they dressed, worked, cooked, enjoyed music and fought. The children and staff had an amazing day.

This term we have taken part in Fathers’ Story week and the children have loved having their Dads come in to school to join in with our fun. Amongst other things they have joined in with house building, gardening, PE, ICT and storytelling.

Many Dads from the village have taken part and we would like to thank all the Dads for their continued support.

Royal Wedding of William and Catherine Duke & ...

On Thursday 28th April the school celebrated the Royal wedding by dressing up in red, white and blue and taking part in a number of activities including flag decorating, learning about members of the Royal family and hat making. We also really enjoyed decorating the school with bunting and having a special lunch complete with yummy wedding cake!

Our school breakfast club started on 3rd of May and is proving to be a great success. The club runs every day from 8am and the children have been really enjoying eating breakfast together before chatting, playing games and taking part in activities. The club is run by our fantastic school cook Caroline Horan and we would like to thank her for making it something that the children really look forward to.

On Monday 9th May Class 1 enjoyed a trip to the Indian restaurant ‘Jewel in the Crown’ in Swindon as part of their topic ‘All around the World’. They had a great time learning about the spices, folding napkins into their famous crowns, dressing parents in saris and even got to experience cooking in chef’s outfits in their kitchen! We would like to thank the staff at the restaurant for their warm welcome as well as the parents who helped to make the day so successful.

South Marston C of E School News – May 2011

We have again had a very busy term.

We are very pleased to celebrate the fact that pre-school became part of the school on 1st April. We celebrated in real style with a children’s disco night organised by the PTA, which was enjoyed by all. The older children were even able to tuck in to some pizza prepared by our school cook before the event. Thanks to all those who helped organise and supervise the event. It was a huge success!

Chocolate chip muffins baking in an oven

On 30th March the school had an inter-house cookery competition where a chef came in to support the children in making carrot and orange muffins! They were judged on many elements, including team work and of course the taste of their yummy muffins! All the children who took part, who were chosen at random, enjoyed the event thoroughly and all the children enjoyed being able to take a muffin home.

Our school celebration of talents evening on 6th April was a massive success again this year with all year groups being represented and showcasing a hugely impressive range of talents, ranging from drumming to poetry recitals. This year we introduced an art exhibition which enabled many children to show their talent in this area in the main school hall whilst sipping on something
