A420 Culvert upgrade works and Road Closure – 17th to 20th June 2011

Swindon Borough Council will be carrying out culvert upgrade works on the A420. The works involve a lane closure for the majority of the works but there will be a weekend road closure. The works involve the following:
- Thames West Utility diversion to facilitate the works
- Removal of the existing drainage structure (3 x pipes)
- Replacement of the existing structure with a 3 x 450mm diameter pipes
- Reinstatement of the road surface
- Road closure to allow the pipes to be constructed across the road centre line
This work is required as a priority, as the area has been prone to flooding in the past and this culvert has been identified as a restriction to flow.
The works will commence on 6th June 2011 for 4 weeks. During this period, the road will be closed from 2300hrs on 17th June 2011 to 0600hrs on 20th June 2011 and an alternative diversion route will be signed from the closure. Works will take place from 0730hrs to 1800hrs daily, Monday to Friday, Saturdays from 0800hrs to 1700hrs and Sundays from 0900hrs to 1700hrs.

Prospect Hospice Starlight Walk – 25th June

With only a month to go until registrations for the Starlight Walk ends, Prospect Hospice are urging ladies who haven’t yet signed up to register now.
The Starlight Walk, supported by Nationwide Building Society, takes place on Saturday 25 June and is the Hospice’s biggest fundraising event of the year. Last year saw over 700 ladies stepping out for a summer-night’s sponsored walk beneath a starlit sky, raising £80,000 for the Hospice. And with over 300 women already registered for this year’s event, fundraiser Becky Gammon is urging would-be participants to sign up before registrations close on 30 May.
“We have been pleased with the sign-up rate so far, but we’ve still got a long way to go to break the record.” says Becky. “We’re hoping that there are a lot of ladies out there planning to take part who haven’t yet registered. If you’re one of them, either phone us or visit our website to sign up and register.
“It’s a really fun girl’s night out, a physical challenge and a brilliant way to help raise much-needed sponsorship for Prospect Hospice. I’m really hoping there are still ladies out there who just make that decision to take part and join us for what I know is going to be a really great event.”
Taking part in the Starlight Walk for the first time is Nationwide Building Society employee Sam Sealey. Sam will be tackling the 10k route as a way of saying thank you for the care her mum Rita received at Prospect Hospice in the final weeks of her life.
“Prospect Hospice wasn’t something I had known about until Mum was admitted there last October,” she says, “We would sometimes visit the Prospect shops, but I either didn’t know or didn’t want to know about the Hospice. When Mum needed their support, I was so glad that the Prospect Hospice was there.
“I’ll be thinking of Mum, of course, but it’s also my son Joe’s birthday. Before she died, Mum would tell Joe that she would watch down on him from the moon, so a Starlight Walk on his birthday seems very fitting.”
Ann Vince will also be taking part in the Starlight Walk for the first time, setting herself the challenge of the 15k route. The date is an important one for Ann, as it marks the second anniversary of the death of her best friend Delphius King at Prospect Hospice.
“Delphius was someone very special, and we were friends for many years. Prospect was a huge source of comfort to her in her final days and they cared for her extremely well. It was clear from Del’s stay that the Hospice is such a great place and that’s what encouraged me to take part in the walk.
“Del’s experience has made me feel very close to the Hospice and what it does. Del’s daughter-in-law has said that she will sponsor me, so clearly she feels that Prospect Hospice is a charity worth supporting too.”

Swindon Core Strategy Flyer – Village Meeting Dates

What are the issues?:
- number of houses to be built in the village
- through-traffic
- flooding
- social/council houses
- 2,000 houses by Nightingale Wood
- wind turbines
The recent Borough Council Core Strategy Exhibition in the Village Hall generated significant interest and a lot of strong feedback on the scale of development. A Village Development Working Group has been meeting regularly and liaising with the Parish Council to draft a response to the Core Strategy.
The Working Group wishes to provide villagers with the opportunity to explore that feedback and discuss the different courses of action open to us. Even if you have been to previous meetings, we now want villagers to help decide the best solution for South Marston’s future.
To reach as many residents as possible, we are running a series of three identical meetings at different dates and times of the day and hope you will be able to come to one of them.
Each meeting will last less than 1½ hours with a presentation by a member of the Working Group, followed by a question and answer session. A questionnaire will be available and this will provide important evidence to both the Working Party and the Parish Council.
The meetings will also help residents with their own individual responses to the Core Strategy. Please note the deadline for submitting responses to Swindon Borough has been extended from the 19th May to the 16th June.
What will South Marston look like in 2015?

Swindon Borough Council are holding an exhibition that sets out their vision for the Borough for the next 20 years. The draft of the “Core Strategy” covers subjects important to all of us, such as :-
- The expansion of South Marston
- 2000 new homes next to Nightingale Wood
- Traffic plans and relief roads
- A major shopping and office centre South of the A420
- New Schools
- Flooding issues
- Potential sites for wind turbines.

AEE Renewables invite all members of the public to attend a PUBLIC VIEWING of the plans for a SOLAR FARM in the parish of South Marston.

You are invited by AEE Renewables to attend a public consultation which will take place from 12 noon to 7.00 pm. AEE Renewables are proposing to apply for planning permission to install a solar farm on land adjoining South Marston village. The land in question will still be used to graze sheep whilst harvesting the sun. Full details will be on view on this day and representatives from AEE Renewables will be there to answer any questions or concerns.

Village Expansion Review Meeting – 7th Feb 2011

Villagers are invited to a meeting hosted by the Parish Council in the Village Hall at 7.30 on the 7th Feb. to preview two key documents prepared by Swindon Borough Council.
