Residents living near a major bypass in Oxfordshire are concerned traffic will be diverted through their villages when it closes for resurfacing work.
The A420 Shrivenham bypass will shut between Watchfield and Lower Bourton for seven weeks from 21 July.
Sue Nodder, chair of Watchfield Parish Council, has called for reduced speed limits through affected villages and policing of heavy goods vehicles.
The county council said repairs to the worn-out surface were “essential”.
Some of the 20,000 motorists who use the route daily will see their journeys increase from 12 to 50 miles.
Oxfordshire County Council said measures would be put in place to prevent through-traffic using “unsuitable local roads”.
It said the full closure of the bypass was necessary to “minimise the duration of construction disruption”, and added properties and businesses would still be accessible.
