Swindon Advertiser published an article about one-time South Marston Resident, Alfred Williams.

In a town quick to celebrate a working class hero, Swindon lags behind in its recognition of writer Alfred Williams, an omission about to be addressed by the recently formed Alfred Williams Heritage Society.

Alfred was born in South Marston, one of Elias and Elizabeth Williams’s eight children. A carpenter employing one boy at the time of the 1881 census, Welsh born Elias deserted the family soon afterwards. Continue reading Swindon Advertiser – Town poet in the spotlight


Swindon Wi-Fi turn on begins in Highworth

The first phase of Swindon’s free public wireless internet has been switched on in the north of the town.

Swindon Borough Council plans for all 186,000 citizens to have blanket “wi-fi mesh” coverage by April 2010.

Battered Moons Poetry Competition

The Battered Moons Poetry competition is free to enter. It is open to all Swindon Borough residents, aged 14 or over. The 7 winners will read at the Swindon Literature Festival alongside a well known poet and have their poems published online. The event is supported by the Swindon Literature Festival and ARTSWORDS, an Arts Council literature project.

We would like everyone to consider submitting. The deadline is 8 January 2010 and submissions are accepted now, via swindonpoetry@googlemail.com

Christmas Recycling Collections

Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year so there will be no waste collections in the village.

Information on alternative collection days will be delivered to our homes by Swindon Borough Council during December. If you don’t receive anything please telephone 01793 445501 (Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm; Saturday 9am to 1pm).
