Police Update: November 2012

Burglary
Burglary (Photo credit: phil dokas)

Please be aware that there has been an increase in burglaries in North Swindon, predominantly Abbey Meads, St Andrews Ridge and Greenmeadow areas. Entry is usually at the rear of the property and forced. If you see any vehicles that are not familiar to you and contain 3 to 4 males who look out of place, make a note of the registration, make, type and colour and report it to the police on 101. It is believed that they are using performance top range cars like BMWs Audis etc, but this does not exclude other makes.

If it doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t – please choose to do something about it and report on 101.

The Police Facebook sites are really worth a look (don’t forget to tick “like”).

There are some simple measures you can put in place to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of burglary:

  • Close and lock all your doors and windows when you go out. Pay particular attention to the back of your premises – a popular entry point for burglars
  • Keep valuables and keys out of view and out of reach of windows and doors
  • Don’t leave door keys in hiding places such as under the doormat. Thieves know all the hiding places
  • Keep your shed and outbuildings locked. Your tools and ladders should be locked away as they are useful to a thief who wants to gain entry
  • Don’t leave a window open a few inches for ventilation when you go out Illuminate dark areas around the house. Burglars don’t like light!
  • Don’t leave curtains and blinds drawn in the daytime – they attract the thief
  • Property Marking Kit – having your property marked helps Police verify it has been stolen

POLICE MEETINGS – JUNE 2012

There have recently been several thefts of Lightning Conductors in the village, one from the School and the other from the Church. Both places had the copper cut from just over head height in secluded areas. There have also been reports of scrap metal being taken from gardens.

We would ask everyone to be vigilant and to keep any scrap metal or similar out of view. Please call if you see anyone or vehicles acting suspiciously. 101 for non emergencies, 999 for emergencies.

We would also like to add a note about cold callers. Last year several companies were touting for business in the Stratton area to block pave driveways, this is generally seasonal when the weather is better. Payment is asked for in cash. Within the rural area the off cuts are then fly tipped in fields and gateways along with other household rubbish. Please call 101 if you are approached for this or similar business. If you wish to have work done use reputable and established companies.

Service to the Community Award

The Wiltshire Police Authority (WPA) Service to the Community Award recognises the exceptional service made by individuals within a Neighbourhood Policing Team.

They could be a Police Officer, Police Community Support Officer, Special Constable, or a volunteer – the only criteria is that you believe their service to the Neighbourhood Policing Team has been outstanding.

We are now seeking nominations from the public for this Award. So if you know someone from your Neighbourhood Policing Team who has ‘gone that extra mile’ or provided a service that you believe is second to none, then we want to hear about it.

You can make your Nomination in three easy steps!

  1. Tell us as briefly as you can why the nominee is worthy of the Award
  2. Post or email your nomination to the WPA offices on the contact details below
  3. Let us have your nomination by Friday 2nd March 2012

The Judging Panel will then consider all Nominations and invite the short listed nominees to attend a lunchtime presentation on Tuesday 27th March 2012.

The winner will receive the Wiltshire Police Authority Service to the Community Award at the presentation, and all shortlisted nominees will receive a certificate.
