You may have received through the post a letter from DEFRA (the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs) explaining that South Marston is in an Avian Flu Control Zone.
We are within the ‘Surveillance Zone’ which surrounds an outbreak in the Coleshill area.
A legal requirement is in force from the 7th of November to keep all poultry and captive birds indoors. Residents who keep ducks, chickens, geese or pigeons are asked to register them with DEFRA.
If you have over 50 birds, you MUST register them.

The government has also issued advice on wild birds and the dangers outdoors, which can be summarised as follows:
- Keep to the footpaths; keep dogs on leads
- Do not pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds
- Do not touch bird feathers or any surfaces contaminated with wild bird
droppings
