The Youth Club is in danger of closing because they need more volunteers to help run the club.
For the past 14 years, Julie Hatherall has been running the club for children aged between 8 and 16 years old, meeting fortnightly on Fridays from 6.30 – 8pm in the Village Hall.
The club needs regular helpers to help set up the hall on a club night, then stay and help run the session and pack up at the end. New committee members are also sought. This is a very popular club and was awarded Youth Club of the Year in 2012 from Youth Action Wiltshire.
This is the only club in the village for children to enjoy and the benefits include:
- Having a safe space to relax and enjoy the various activities on offer
- Promoting open youth-to-youth communication and being able to talk openly with peers and caring adults. Being part of a group that can help young people develop important personal and interpersonal skills including the ability to think critically and solve problems
- It can also help young people gain self-confidence and self-esteem. Contributing to a group can help them see themselves as being able to really help other people, having something important to offer and maybe join the adult village volunteers in the future. Age is no barrier, intergenerational interaction provides opportunities for different generations to come together to share experiences, knowledge and skills that are mutually beneficial to all
- It can help reduce the risk of becoming involved in unsafe activities such as using drugs and alcohol. Being involved in community activities has been shown to be a protective factor and helps young people to make healthy choices.
